The Sun Power Lawn Care 2018 Year in Review
Hello and welcome! This has been our most exciting year yet. Read on to find out why!
As the year ends, we want to take some time and reflect on 2018. We did this last year and want to continue the tradition. Reflection allows us to look back and examine milestones and goals we achieved. It also gives us ideas for what we want to accomplish in the coming year.
We’re going to start this look-back with how we grew. Then, we’ll review what factors led to our growth. We’ll talk about our fantastic partners and how we gave back to the community. Finally, we’ll touch on our visions for 2019 and beyond.
Sun Power Lawn Care Growth in 2018
This is our 5th year in business and we continue to expand. Last year, we mentioned that we purchased a 48” electric lawn mower. That turned out to be a great decision; as a matter of fact, our lawn care professionals want another one now!
This year, we painted all of our trucks orange to signify the color of our brand. Speaking of trucks, we purchased a truck extension which we use to haul around our mowers. We can drive the mower up the trailer, secure it in place, and head to our next job. This has made our transportation more efficient, giving us more time to spend at the homes of our clients.
A major change this year for us was our location: We moved! For the first time, Sun Power Lawn Care is operating out of a facility, instead of a garage. Our office is just a small walk from this facility.
One of our goals for 2018 was to hire a new staff member who would field client phone calls, among other office tasks. We wrote, “Picking up every phone call and meeting every single person that calls us is still a goal we’re striving for. We plan to reach it in 2018 by designating an employee to field calls throughout the day.” I’m happy to share that we did hire a great office administrator—Chelsea—to do just that.
Keeping Sun Power Lawn Care Eco-Friendly
Our clients love our clean, quiet, and electric mowers. Some clients—especially those with babies—are fans of service that doesn’t disturb them with noise. Other clients—those are health-conscious—care more about the “greener” facet of our services.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) writes, “it is not widely known that small gasoline-powered engines and tools present a serious health hazard. They produce high concentrations of CO–a poisonous gas.” These small, gas-powered engines include those found in lawn mowers.
Carbon monoxide is poisonous to people and animals alike. Given this fact, we’re still the only full-service electric lawn care company in Gainesville, FL. Our dedication to clean, eco-friendly lawn care has contributed to our growth in 2018.
Happy Employees, Clients, and Referral Partners
We pride ourselves on being a customer service-centered company. On this note, we attribute a focus on customer service as a factor in our growth. And we’re able to provide better customer service when our employees are happy.
This year, we installed a new snack fridge, which they love. We also implemented an attendance and quality-based bonus which pays off over time.
In 2018, we released our first Employee Handbook. This holds each employee to the same standard and everyone knows what’s expected.
We strengthened our relationships with our referral partners. Namely, Chad Hanna of Shade Shifters Tree Service and Kevin Smith of McCall Service Lawn Treatments are some of our key partners. We also continued our relationship with We are Neutral.
Giving Back in 2018
Giving back to the community is an important aspect of who we are as a company. We believe it’s part of our responsibility! This year, Tom volunteered with We are Neutral at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. This is an annual four-day event which takes place in Manchester, TN.
We are Neutral helped us to continue being carbon neutral. Part of what this non-profit organization does is plant native trees local to our Gainesville area. We’re able to offset the carbon emissions from our entire business operation by sponsoring the planting of trees. We are Neutral also retrofits low-income housing for energy efficiency. We love these guys!
In 2018, Tom assumed his role as the Social Committee Chair of Alachua County Emerging Leaders (ACEL). ACEL connects young professionals and recent graduates through social events. ACEL encourage these young professionals to remain in Gainesville to make it a better place to “live, work, and play”.
Sun Power Lawn Care has had booths at two festivals: Vegfest and the Spring Garden Festival. Tom and his team were happy to meet like-minded members of the public when it comes to sustainability and clean energy. Tom ran a giveaway and a solar-powered car race for children. The winner received a prize any kid would love: Candy!
2019 Ideas, Goals, and New Service Packages
One of our most exciting additions for next year is client-focused: The Sun Power Lawn Care app. Clients will be able to log into their accounts schedule service. In addition, they’ll be able to view prior service and payments. We’d also like clients to be able to pay for service right from the app. You’ll only need to enter your credit card information one time. Then, everything is handled by a third party payment processor which allows for recurring subscription payments. You can expect the app to be released in a few months. Check back then!
There will be a couple more reasons to check our website often in 2019. We’re planning on revamping our blog to bring you original, helpful, and regularly-scheduled articles centered around your lawn care. We’re also going to have a new website design which will be more user-friendly. Like the app, clients will be able to log into their client portal and request service. There will also be a new video on the homepage describing our services and who we are.
Finally, 2019 will see new package options for our clients. Often times, our clients want additional services in addition to lawn mowing. For example, they may also want hedge cutting, tree inspections, and lawn treatments. Speaking of tree inspections, this service is free of charge.
We’re thinking about including three package plans. They will include:
- Option 1: Mowing, hedge cutting, and weeding
- Option 2: Option 1, and Irrigation, lawn treatments, and mulch laying
- Option 3: Option 2, and shrub fertilizing, lawn aeration, flower install, etc, everything!
Stay tuned for the official word and prices for these packages.
The emissions-free lawn care industry is growing. And in Gainesville, Florida, we’re the only lawn care company that uses all-electric equipment which runs on solar-powered batteries.
