What Size Lawn Mower Do I Need? Your Guide for Small and Large Lawns 10

what size lawn mower do i need

Some need a massive lawn mowing service. Most don’t.

Bigger isn’t always better.

Especially when you’re choosing a lawn mower for your property.

Damage from large, heavy mowers is a common problem on small residential yards. From wheel tracks in the grass to root compaction, these issues can build up and take a serious toll on the health of your lawn.

It may seem efficient to choose the biggest mower with the widest blade—but the right equipment for the job is what’s most important.

So if you’ve been asking yourself “what size lawn mower do I need?” we’re here to answer that question.

Here’s what to look for:

What Size Lawn Mower Do I Need for Small and Residential Yards?

Lightweight walk-behind mowers are best for the average residential yard in Gainesville and North Central Florida.

That’s because a big mower will need to take lots of tight turns around a small yard, twisting the wheels into the grass and tearing it up. It’s especially an issue in this region because St. Augustine grass, the typical household grass, is so delicate.

Small mowers also won’t cause compaction in your yard.

Week after week, a heavy mower will compact the soil and grass roots in a small yard. Compaction makes it difficult for your lawn to get the nutrients and water it needs to thrive. This can lead to expensive problems like thatch, which can ruin your grass and require you to lay down new sod.

Hiring out your lawn service? Even if you’re confident that they’re using the appropriate mower size for your yard, ask if they make sure to “change the angle of cut” while mowing. The correct answer is yes—this just means they won’t be mowing the same path every time, another major factor in compaction.

Sun Power Lawn Care has a dedicated small-yard mowing team for these reasons. We use a 33” walk-behind mower to handle tight turns and cut clean lines, even in small spaces.

Plus, one of the perks of being an electric lawn care service is that our mowers are lighter than gas-powered equivalents. Good for the earth, good for your grass!

What Size Lawn Mower Do I Need for Large and Commercial Properties?

While large mowers can be a problem on small yards, that doesn’t mean there’s no use for them.

Bigger commercial properties are perfect for large, ride-top mowers. With enough space to make wide turns and use a variety of cutting paths, many of the problems you see on small yards are eliminated.

This is why Sun Power Lawn Care expanded our service last year with a new 48” lawn mower. This ride mower is designed to efficiently mow lawns up to three acres.

And don’t forget—it’s electric! All the power of a gas ride mower, but lighter and easier on grass.

Commercial properties may be especially interested in large electric lawn mowers, because they’re much quieter than gas-powered mowers. So if there are offices or apartment buildings on your property, you won’t disturb the tenants with noisy mowing from outside their windows.

Recently, my husband and I moved to a new home that has a much larger lawn than our previous yard. We are looking to find the right lawn mower to help us properly maintain our property. I hadn’t thought about how a large, heavy lawn mower would compact the soil and grass roots, so we’ll be sure to use the right size.

Thank you for all this great information about choosing a lawn care service! I really like your point about how even the size of the lawn mower is important and I’m glad that you described that yard because it looks like that I’ll need a company that provides a specific service for small delicate yards. We just moved and our I want to hire someone else to take care of it since I’ve never done that before.

I want to make sure that I get my lawn taken care of properly. It makes sense that I would want to find a professional who can do it for me! I’ll make sure that I get one that uses a good mower. A small one would work fine for my yard, since it isn’t too big.

It’s interesting that you talked about choosing a company that will use a small mower if your yard is small, so your lawn doesn’t end up compacted. I have been looking for someone to work on my yard, because I’m too old to do it anymore. I can see how it would be good to find someone that uses a smaller mower, that way they will be able to cut more precisely.

I like how you say that you would want to find a lawn care service that has the right sized mower for your yard. It would make sense to find someone who has a smaller lawn mower if you don’t have a really big yard. My sister is looking for someone to help take care of her grass, so she’ll have to find someone who has the right size mower.

I want to make sure that I get the right people to mow my lawn. It makes sense that I would want to ensure that their lawn mower isn’t too big! If it was then they wouldn’t be able to reach the smaller parts of my lawn.

That’s great advice to ask the service specialists to change the angle of the cut. My wife and I just moved to a new area and we’re looking for a new service. I’ll be sure to ask them this question. Thanks for the great information.

I have not had the time lately to hire a lawn mowing service because of my busy schedule. But you made an interesting point to always ask the person you hired if they “change the angle of cut”. I will certainly keep this in mind when I schedule for a lawn mowing service next month. Thanks for sharing this.

it’s interesting like you said that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to lawn care and equipment to use. A big heavy mower may look nice and fancy but it can’t get into tight spots and may put ruts in the grass. Definitely a good idea to make sure the service you hire has equipment appropriate to your needs. Thank you for the information!

Much obliged to you for the 7 great simple tips on grass mind in the fall. I hadn’t thought of proceeding to cut all through fall and up until winter. You’re correct however you need to ensure the grass gets a lot of daylight while remaining at a sound tallness to guarantee uniform care.
